Mozambique now has nearly half a million electronic money agents, reinforcing the role of mobile financial services as one of the country’s main tools for financial inclusion.
Data from the Bank of Mozambique shows that, at the end of the second quarter of 2026, there were 494,955 electronic money agents across the country.
The figure represents an increase of 27,333 agents in just three months, compared with the 467,622 recorded in the first quarter of the year.
Electronic money agents allow customers to make payments, transfers and cash withdrawals without having to visit a traditional bank branch.
Mozambique currently has three electronic money operators: M-Pesa, e-Mola and M-Kesh. These services operate through mobile phones and have become a key channel for expanding access to financial services.
Including traditional banking access points, Mozambique had 532,761 financial service access points by the end of June, an increase of 44,861 compared with the first quarter of 2026.
Maputo City had the highest number of access points, with 87,833, followed by Nampula Province with 78,089 and Maputo Province with 74,168.
Despite the strong expansion of mobile financial services, the traditional banking network continued to cover 128 districts, representing 82.6% of the national total.
By the end of the second quarter, the Bank of Mozambique also recorded 650 bank branches, 77 microbank and credit cooperative branches, 329 banking agents, 1,291 ATMs and 31,316 point-of-sale terminals.
The figures show that mobile financial services continue to expand their role in Mozambique’s financial system, particularly in areas where traditional banking services remain limited.
