Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has urged motorists, particularly long-distance passenger transport operators, to avoid night travel and excessive speed following the road accident in Zavala, Inhambane province, that killed 24 people.
The Head of State made the appeal during a rally in Matola at the end of a three-day visit to Maputo province.
“I reiterate the appeal to motorists to avoid excessive speed and to passenger transport operators to avoid travelling at night, particularly on long-distance routes,” Chapo said.
The President said authorities are on the ground investigating the causes of the accident and determining responsibility for the crash, which occurred on Thursday night in Helene, Zavala district.
The accident involved a passenger transport vehicle and a truck belonging to the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces, which were travelling in opposite directions along National Road Number One.
Chapo expressed regret over the loss of life and called for greater caution on the roads as traffic accidents continue to claim hundreds of lives across the country.
Defence Minister Cristóvão Chume confirmed that a military vehicle was involved in the accident and said authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to Mozambique Armed Defence Forces spokesperson Omar Saranga, the military truck was part of a logistics convoy travelling to the site of the Armed Forces Day celebrations scheduled for 25 September.
Official figures show that at least 239 people were killed and 1,112 injured in 169 road accidents recorded in Mozambique during the first half of this year.
In 2025, the country recorded 611 road accidents, resulting in 830 deaths.
