President Daniel Chapo begins a three-day state visit to Botswana on Monday, 28 September, aimed at strengthening political, diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
The visit takes place at the invitation of Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko and coincides with celebrations marking the country’s 60th anniversary of independence, which Chapo is attending as a guest of honour.
During his stay, the Mozambican Head of State is expected to hold talks with Botswana authorities to assess the state of bilateral cooperation and discuss matters of common interest, with particular emphasis on trade, infrastructure and regional integration.
Mozambique and Botswana maintain cooperation in several areas. In March 2025, Duma Boko paid a working visit to Mozambique, during which the two countries expressed their intention to deepen political, economic, social and cultural ties.
One of the economic issues expected to feature prominently during Chapo’s visit is the Techobanine port and railway project in Matutuíne district, Maputo province.
The project envisages the construction of a deep-water port and a railway connection linking Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana, creating a new freight corridor between Southern Africa’s hinterland and the Indian Ocean.
For Botswana, a landlocked country, the project represents an opportunity to diversify transport routes and improve access to international markets.
Mozambique, in turn, could strengthen its position as a logistics gateway for inland countries in the region by taking advantage of its geographic location and port infrastructure.
President Daniel Chapo has previously identified Techobanine as one of the strategic projects capable of supporting Mozambique’s economic diversification and strengthening regional integration.
Despite the interest shown by the three countries, the project still depends on technical studies, financial structuring and the mobilisation of the resources required for its implementation.
Chapo’s visit to Botswana is therefore expected to combine the diplomatic dimension of the country’s 60th independence anniversary celebrations with discussions on economic opportunities and regional cooperation.
The President is accompanied by First Lady Gueta Chapo, members of the Government, members of the Assembly of the Republic, officials from the Presidency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and representatives of other State institutions.
