ANAMOLA Removes Messias Uarreno And Appoints New Secretary-General

The decision was made through orders issued by the party president on 10 September 2026, according to a statement released by ANAMOLA’s National Directorate of Information.

The party did not provide specific reasons for Uarreno’s removal, stating only that it recognised and appreciated the services he provided during his time in office.

James Mlando Fausto Njiji will remain interim Secretary-General until his appointment is considered and ratified by ANAMOLA’s National Council, whose next meeting is expected to take place in September.

According to the statement, the change is intended to ensure administrative continuity and the normal functioning of the party’s central bodies, while bringing greater momentum to its organisational structure.

Messias Uarreno had taken over as interim Secretary-General in September 2025, replacing Alberto Manhique in one of the first leadership changes within the newly created party.

Before Uarreno, Alberto Manhique had been appointed interim Secretary-General during ANAMOLA’s first extraordinary Executive Commission meeting in August 2025. During the same period, Venâncio Mondlane assumed the interim leadership of the new political formation.

James Mlando Fausto Njiji, who now takes over the Secretariat-General, previously served in Mozambique’s Assembly of the Republic, where he was a member of the Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Economic Activities and Services.

ANAMOLA emerged from Venâncio Mondlane’s political trajectory following Mozambique’s 2024 general elections and the protests that followed his rejection of the official election results.

In February 2025, Mondlane announced plans to create a new political party after ending his relationship with PODEMOS.

The name initially proposed was ANAMALALA, an expression popularised during the election campaign, but the designation did not move forward. The movement later adopted the name Aliança Nacional para um Moçambique Livre e Autónomo, abbreviated as ANAMOLA.

Venâncio Mondlane initially led the party on an interim basis and consolidated his position in June 2026, when he was elected president of ANAMOLA at its first National Convention, held in Nampula.

The replacement of Messias Uarreno comes at a time when ANAMOLA is seeking to strengthen its internal organisation and expand its structures across the country.

In its statement on the leadership change, the party reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its internal organisation, complying with its statutes and consolidating its structures ahead of future political challenges.
