João Muchine Mudema has been appointed by FRELIMO’s Political Commission to serve as the party’s interim First Secretary in Maputo City until internal elections are held in the capital.
The decision was announced by FRELIMO spokesperson Pedro Madeira Guiliche following a meeting of the Political Commission, as part of the ongoing restructuring of the party’s organisation in Maputo City.
“The Political Commission decided to appoint Comrade João Muchine Mudema, Secretary of the Central Committee for Party Organisation, to serve on an interim basis as First Secretary in Maputo City until the election of the First Secretary is held,” Pedro Madeira Guiliche said.
Mudema takes over the interim leadership around three months after António Niquice was removed from office in June, after which FRELIMO’s structure in the capital entered a restructuring process.
The process already has a defined timetable. Party members wishing to run for District First Secretary positions are required to submit their applications between 7 and 12 September.
The internal elections form part of a broader restructuring of FRELIMO’s structures across the country, which will culminate in the selection of delegates to the party’s 13th Congress.
The congress is scheduled to take place from 20 to 25 July 2027 in Nampula City.
To prepare for the congress, the Political Commission approved the creation of a Central Preparatory Office, as well as provincial and district brigades, and adopted a timetable for the party’s internal elections.
During the same meeting, the Political Commission also assessed the performance of President Daniel Chapo’s Government, highlighting measures being implemented in the economic sector.
“The priority of the Government led by Comrade President Daniel Francisco Chapo remains focused on accelerating the country’s socio-economic development, thereby creating more jobs, particularly for young people and women, with a view to improving the living conditions of Mozambicans,” Guiliche said.
The spokesperson added that the Political Commission also reviewed the security situation in northern Mozambique and highlighted the response of the Defence and Security Forces to recent terrorist attacks.
João Muchine Mudema is expected to remain at the helm of FRELIMO’s Maputo City structure until a new First Secretary is elected, as the party continues preparations for its 2027 congress.
