Mozambique’s national football team, the Mambas, face Sudan this Tuesday at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo in the second round of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The match comes amid logistical difficulties for the Sudanese national team, which arrived in Maputo with only half of the 28 players called up, due to delays in flight connections.
By the eve of the match, only 14 players had arrived in the Mozambican capital, including one goalkeeper. The remaining members of the delegation were expected to arrive in the following hours.
To reach Mozambique, the Sudanese team had to complete a long air journey through Kenya and South Africa before arriving in Maputo.
Sudan coach James Kwesi Appiah acknowledged that the situation was far from ideal for preparing a qualifying match, but said he remained confident in the players available to him.
Mozambique go into the match after a 1-1 draw against Senegal in the opening round of qualification.
Sudan, meanwhile, beat Ethiopia 1-0 and enter the second round at the top of the group with three points.
The Mambas and Senegal have one point each, while Ethiopia are bottom of the group without a point.
Recent meetings between Mozambique and Sudan have been evenly balanced, with the two national teams having faced each other four times and recording two victories each.
At the Zimpeto National Stadium, however, Mozambique won both of their previous matches against Sudan.
The most recent meeting between the two teams also ended in a 2-1 victory for Mozambique.
Tuesday’s match gives the Mambas an opportunity to secure their first win of the qualifying campaign and collect important points in the race for a place at AFCON 2027.
